Employment in Forestry

Employment opportunities in forestry

With harvesting, transport and handling now well underway, job opportunities have increased. The Forest & Wood Products R&D Corporation and Bureau of Rural Sciences funded a study Socio-economic impacts of plantation forestry in the Great Southern Region which documents that the industry is now employing 500 full time equivalents in the Great Southern. In 2007, a significant tonnage of over 1 million will increase jobs in the transport, processing and service industries. To download the study see: www. daff.gov.au/corporate_docs/publications/

Timber 2020 is working with the Lower Great southern Local Community Partnerships Programme investigating training and job opportunities for the 15 – 19 year old students. There are also opportunities through the training programmes delivered by TAFE and the Forest Training Centre. There will be a time when employment needs will peak. The job opportunities will be numerous, in 2007 when the Lignor Engineered Strand Lumber Plant commences site preparation and construction where some 500 personnel will be required.
